RESPONSIBLE GAMBLING

UNDERSTANDING RESPONSIBLE GAMBLING

Responsible gambling means making smart choices to keep it fun and avoid harm. It involves understanding the risks and using strategies to reduce them.

1. Recognize the Signs of Problem Gambling

Recognize signs of a gambling problem, such as:

  • Overspending or excessive time on gambling
  • Borrowing money or selling items to gamble
  • Ignoring duties and relationships for gambling
  • Feeling guilt, anxiety, or depression about gambling
  • Chasing losses with more gambling If you notice these signs, consider reassessing your gambling habits and seeking help.

2. Set Limits and Stick to Them

A core tenet of responsible gambling involves establishing boundaries on both the time and monetary expenditure dedicated to gambling activities.
  • Time Limits: Set a time limit for gambling and stick to it. Take breaks and ensure it doesn't disrupt work, family, or social life.
  • Set a spending limit for gambling as an entertainment expense. Only gamble what you can afford to lose and don't chase losses beyond your limit.

3. Seek Support and Counselling

If you struggle with gambling, seek professional help.
  • Join support groups to share experiences and get encouragement.
  • Access complimentary counseling from organizations like the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation, which offers 24/7 support and face-to-face counseling.
  • Use helplines for confidential advice and immediate assistance.

4. Educate Yourself and Others

Knowledge is crucial for responsible gambling. Learn about the risks and safe strategies.
  • Stay Informed: Read, attend workshops, and engage in awareness campaigns on responsible gambling.
  • Share Information: Educate friends and family, promoting safe gambling habits and informed decisions.

5. Utilize Self-Exclusion Programs

Self-exclusion programs help those struggling with gambling issues.

  • Voluntary Self-Exclusion: Sign up with gambling companies to close your accounts, return funds, and remove you from marketing lists.
  • Blocking Software: Use software to block access to gambling websites and apps.
  • Physical Measures: Avoid gambling venues and request staff to prevent you from participating.
Responsible gambling is about maintaining control and making informed choices to ensure that gambling remains an enjoyable activity.
By setting limits, recognizing signs of problem gambling, utilizing self-exclusion programs, seeking support, educating yourself and others, and adhering to regulations, you can gamble responsibly and protect yourself and those around you from the potential adverse effects of gambling.

SELF EXCLUSION

The self-exclusion intervention as outlined in the law is supported by NRGP.
  • The NRGP provides counseling and support to the excluded individuals and their immediate family members as part of this program.
  • A player may choose to abstain from gambling through this legally mandated program. According to the law, anyone can request exclusion.
  • For six months, a person who has been barred from gambling is not permitted to engage in any gambling activities. The NRGP provides counseling to the excluded person during this time of exclusion.
